Handwoven Linen Cushion with Antique French Embroidery

This one-of-a-kind cushion brings together two crafts separated by time. The centre features a beautiful piece of antique French embroidery, carefully preserved and given a new life within a handwoven linen border.

I designed and wove the border on my floor loom in Yorkshire using 100% linen. Its natural texture complements the delicate embroidery while adding strength and character to the finished piece. Every stage of the weaving was carried out by hand, creating a cushion that celebrates traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of natural fibres.

I have collected antique French embroidery for many years, always hoping to find the right way to incorporate it into my own weaving. This cushion is the first piece in that collection, combining vintage needlework with contemporary handweaving in a way that honours both.

No two cushions will ever be the same. The embroidery has its own history, and the slight irregularities in both the vintage fabric and the handwoven linen are part of what make this piece truly unique.

Care

To help preserve both the handwoven linen and the antique embroidery, I recommend gentle spot cleaning where possible. If necessary, hand wash carefully in cool water using a mild detergent, avoiding vigorous rubbing of the embroidered panel. Dry flat and iron on the reverse with a cloth between the iron and the embroidery.
